Cleaning gutters and storm drains is a simple yet impactful way to prevent water pollution and protect local waterways. When leaves, trash, and debris clog storm drains, it can lead to flooding and cause pollutants to flow directly into rivers, lakes, and oceans. By keeping these areas clear, you help ensure that rainwater can flow freely and reduce the risk of harmful substances entering the water supply.
To get started, gather supplies like gloves, a rake, a broom, and a trash bag. If you’re cleaning gutters at home, you may also need a ladder and a scoop to remove debris safely. For storm drains, focus on clearing leaves, litter, and other debris from the surface and surrounding area. Avoid pushing debris into the drain, as this can worsen blockages. Be cautious of sharp objects or hazardous materials, and report any large or dangerous obstructions to local authorities for proper removal.
Once you’ve collected the debris, separate recyclables like plastic bottles or cans from general trash to ensure proper disposal. Compost leaves and organic matter if possible, as this reduces waste and creates nutrient-rich soil for gardening.
To prove you completed this project, take a picture of the gutters and storm drains before you begin, and then take another one of the same spot once it’s clean and trash-free. After you are finished, you will upload your images and answer a few questions.
